April Scholar Athletes

Pictured: Coach Hawkins, Jennifer Nweke, and Asst. Athletic Dir. Tom Gerber

Taylor High School senior Jennifer Nweke has been named the Alief ISD April 2009 Female Athlete of the Month. She has been a member of the Taylor Track team for four years. Nweke has successfully qualified for the Regional Track Meet for the last two years and will be participating in the State Track Meet this year.
Coach Karen Hawkins says, “Not only does she know how to rack up great numbers when she runs but Jennifer has maintained an A average during all four years and her senior GPA is a 4.6. Her cumulative GPA ranks her number 56 out of 528.” She looks forward to continuing her education in college and would enjoy participating in track.

Elsik High School senior Jamal Elam has been named the Alief ISD April 2009 Male Athlete of the Month. He has been swimming for the Elsik team for two years and “…he has shown tremendous leadership qualities and a strong will to reach success,” said Coach Ed Dickerson. Elam makes his grades in the classroom and is a member of the Elsik band, therefore he does not have time for an athletic period so he comes to workout in the pool for his workout at 5:20 every morning, swimming 2,500 to 4,00 yards. He was chosen “Most Valuable” male swimmer last spring and is the 2007-2008 “team captain.”
Elam maintains a positive and spirited attitude and is more than willing to work with and help younger, inexperienced swimmers become better and faster. He plans on continuing his education and will keep swimming.

The Alief ISD Air Force JROTC participated in the Cinco de Mayo parade
in downtown Houston. More than 40 AFJROTC members proudly showed
how their drill practice pays off.

In compliance with Senate Bill 530, all grades 3-12 students in Texas must take the FITNESSGRAM fitness assessment. This is the first year that all Texas school districts must meet this requirement.
The assessment is not based on athletic ability, but on good health. The assessment will include measurements of aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition.
This is not a “pass or fail” test. FITNESSGRAM is a tool to help determine needs and serve as a guide for planning a personalized physical activity program. The test will not affect grades in any way.
The information gathered will be sent to the Texas Education Agency, which will release a report with District and campus results. No individual scores will be made public, but scores will be available to parents who file a written request.
Alief Independent School District believes that providing health-related fitness information will lead toward a healthier lifestyle. A healthy student is better prepared to learn and perform, in all aspects of life.
Contact the physical education teacher on your campus, or go to

http://www.fitnessgram.net/texas for more information.
