TOP TEN HIGHLIGHTS 2004-2005

Kerr High School

 

Kerr HS placed 2nd in District 23AAA and 6th in Region 4A UIL Academic

meet with 20 students qualifying for Region and 10 of those advancing

to State 4A competition;  a Journalism student placed 2nd in Feature

Writing; the Accounting team placed 5th; and the Current Events team

placed 2nd.  

 

With Title V funds, Kerr addressed TAKs preparation with identified

students. Math, English, Social Studies held pullout sessions during the school day; and Science created a TAKs Camp after school with treats and

transportation.

 

 

Our Technology Specialist arranged 13 video conference sessions covering

Anatomy and Physiology, AP Biology, Journalism, Technology Applications,

Orchestra, Pre-AP Biology, and World and U.S. History. 

 

Journalism earned numerous awards at ILPC, including one 1st place, three

 2nd place, and two 3rd place awards.  One junior qualified for All State

Journalism Staff.

 

Kerr is a Recognized school, meeting both the state AEIS standards and

the federal Annual Yearly Progress standards. 

 

 

Science teachers wrote and received a $35,000 grant for equipment and training for a project expanding the curriculum called “Microscopic Zoo.”

 

We have a long list of accomplishments in the Fine Arts department:  the

 Drama and Choral Depts. were nominated for 2 Tommy Tune Awards—

Best Musical Direction and Best Ensemble & Chorus; Drama presented an

original adaptation of Seedfolks, a resource for diversity; Orchestra won

Sweepstakes in March and Band won Sweepstakes in April in competition;

Choir won Sweepstakes in UIL competition in April.   An orchestra student

made State for the first time. 

 

 

Kerr students have faired well in competitions:  One drama student has

advanced through the Texas Thespian Festival to the International

Thespian Festival to be held in Lincoln, NE, in June; Art had 5 winners in

Culture Shapers, winning $6600; Art also had 2 Gold Key winners in

Scholastic Art Competition; English students earned 2 regional Gold Keys

and a Silver Key in Scholastic Writing Competition; Choir students  

participated for the first time in Culture Shapers placing First and Third. 

Five FBLA members have qualified for National Competition. 

 

Kerr’s Speech and Debate program has grown with more students than

ever before advancing from preliminaries and getting into final rounds. 

Kerr students have won over 40 trophies, including 2 sweepstakes;

qualified 4 students for TFA state; and has built a squad of 46 students

who have consistently captured 5th place in sweepstakes standing in the

city.

 

 

Kerr students and staff worked in conjunction with members of Westchase

Rotary to create the First Annual Kerr Karnival, a fun and educational event

that brought businesses, students, staff, parents, and community together.
