Our school is Respectfully Named After Velma Chambers

Velma Chambers is a former teacher and superintendent for the Alief Independent School District. She dedicated 55 years of her life to education, 17 of those years were in Alief.
Born, March 16, 1894, in Hunt County, Texas, she began her teaching career in 1911. She started teaching in the Alief district in 1949.  She had 51 first and second graders in her first class here in Alief!
Velma was the superintendent of Alief from 1954-1956.  During that time she added Music and Spanish to the elementary school curriculum. She decided that she missed teaching, so she went back into the classroom. She would give 10 more years, before retiring in 1966, at the age of 72.
Chambers Elementary opened its doors to students in the fall of 1971.  We are proud to have our school named after someone who dedicated her life to the youth in our community.
