(Communities
in Schools)
The mission of Communities in
Schools, is to provide and coordinate student
assistance services at the school campus in order to best meet the
physical and emotional needs of at-risk students and to empower those students
to remain in school.
C.I.S. has been at Chambers since August 1994
CIS is a twelve-month dropout prevention and school retention program that works with a variety of students and families on a wide range of social, economic and academic issues. Students are referred to CIS by their teachers, school administrators, the school counselor, parents and by the students themselves.
The
CIS staff- Nohemi Sanchez, Caseworker/Counselor and John Perry,
Senior Project Manager-work with students and families to resolve any issues
that prevent the students from performing in school (and in life) to their
fullest potential.
Issues
often referred to CIS range from academic to behavioral; economic to legal.
Aside from regular group and individual counseling sessions, CIS provides a host
of referral and advocacy services for students and families.
Communities
In Schools also brings in speakers and staff from a variety of community
organizations and groups to educate Chambers’ students and parents on a
variety of subjects from health and disease prevention to home buying and legal
issues.
CIS
also takes students on field trips throughout the year (including six weeks in
the summer) to expose students to a variety of cultural, educational and
enrichment activities they might not otherwise have access to.
