October Scholar Athletes:

Ashford Evans-Brown, a senior at
Taylor High School and
Evelyn Ashiofu, a senior at Elsik High School,
Evelyn Ashiofu has
played all four years at Elsik as a member of the Lady Rams
volleyball team and two years on the softball team. She is a
straight A student with a 4.2 grade point average. Her coach
says Evelyn has made a tremendous contribution not only to the
Elsik athletic program, but to entire school. In addition to
athletics, Evelyn has also been active in the Ladies of
Elegance, Peer Assistance Leadership Services, National Honor
Society, and volunteers at the Sharpstown Community Cente. She
has also competed at the Academic Decathlon and was a qualifier
in the regional science fair last year.
Ashford Evans-Brown has been a member of the
Taylor football program for 4 years and a varsity member for 2
years. He is a starting linebacker and was named team captain
for the 2008 season. His coach describes him as team leader who
stands out both on and off the field. Ashford was an outstanding
member of the Taylor off season program during the winter/spring
of 2008, earning the title of “King of the Den” which is the
highest award you can receive. He currently has a 3.5 grade
point average and plans to major in Computer Science at Texas
State University after graduating from Taylor High School. |

Alief ISD students participate in
national street art competition
Hastings students Bianca Pena, Thi Ho and
Ruben
Vera will be competing in the Third
Annual Via Colori –
Street Painting Festival in downtown Houston this
weekend. Admission is free.
On November 22 and 23, Allen Parkway and Bagby will
be overflowing with vibrant colors, breathtaking images,
and nearly 200 of the nation's most talented creative and
visual artists.
The free two-day event transforms the streets of
downtown Houston into colorful canvases while
changing the lives of children. Money raised during the
event benefits the
Center for Hearing and Speech.
