What is the Ready! Set! Read! program?

Ready! Set! Read! Family Workshops encourage family literacy.  During workshops, parents learn how daily story book reading and related activities can enrich a child's learning.  Families attend sessions twice a month.  With the librarian, they explore oral language strategies, reading strategies and related hands-on activities.  Beginning with a read aloud, the librarian models specific reading strategies.  Each reading strategy is carefully explained and modeled.  Families are given reasons why a particular reading strategy is used and how it helps to develop literacy.  During the workshops, songs, finger plays and nursery rhymes are also introduced.  These activities help to show parents various strategies for encouraging oral language.  At the end of the session, a copy of the storybook is given to each family.
